The ‘Prevention of falls from height at workplaces’ is a Code of Practice issued by the Commission for Occupational Safety and Health (COSH). The operation of the code is to be applied to anyone with a “duty to prevent, as far as practicable, falls from height at workplaces.”

Although a code of practice is not as legally enforceable as a regulation, it nonetheless forms a standard against which workplaces are measured in the event of legal proceedings. The rule of thumb is to either adopt the measures within the code, or a different practice that affords the same level of protection from risk that the code would.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 (OSH Act) obligates employers to identify and assess any additional risks in a workplace that are not specifically dealt with in the code. Control measures must then be implemented to prevent or minimise the risk.
